The desert of southern New Mexico witnessed my first efforts at gardening. In the very small village at the border where we lived, most folks landscaped their yards to complement the dry environment, practicing xeriscape before it became popular. Some insisted on a lawn, at least in the front yard. The yard of the house we bought boasted some struggling grass, so we watered it regularly, and tried to weed it.
So, there I was, yanking dandelions, rag weed and tumbleweeds. Then I came upon this little bitty “something,” and gave it a sharp pull: the little “something” pulled right back. I soaked it while weeding all around it, then when the dirt around it was soft, I yanked again. Again, it yanked back. So I loosened the dirt around it, and tried again. Nothing doing. The leaves were a bit mangled by then, but the tap root held firm. To make a long story short, I decided to cut off all the green stuff and as much of the root that I could reach, and hoped for the best. A few weeks later, there it was again, grinning at me. I just mowed over it.
As I announced last weekend, Sunday, May 31st, is our last day in the church. On Monday, June 1st, we will begin removing all of the sacred objects and turn the church over to the construction company so they can begin their remodeling work. During the first week of June, our maintenance men will be moving the altar and all of the pews into the Fr. Puhl Center. So don’t worry, you won’t have to sit on folding chairs for nine months! You will still have your favorite pew to sit in during Mass. Soon, we will all see the visible results of your generous donations to our monthly Giving Campaign. It is your sacrifices that make possible the beautiful renovation of our church that begins in just three weeks. Thank You!
Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers of our parish! May God give to you and your families a truly blessed and joyful Mother’s Day. We do not tell you often enough that “We love you”. On this day we renew our devotion to you and our desire to place you always in the hands of our good Lord Jesus for His safe-keeping! During the Masses today, our parish prays for the intentions of all our mothers. Your intentions will remain on our altar and in our prayers during the month of May.
Congratulations to the following Holy Trinity students for their accomplishments at the middle school level.

Hero: “A person of great courage, spirit, etc., especially one who has undergone great danger or difficulty.” That’s the first definition we find in the Webster Illustrated Contemporary Dictionary. To this definition I would add: “and whereby accomplished great good.” We admire heroes, and consider them “great people.” Often we wish we could imitate them, but most of us feel, deep down, that we do not have the courage to go through what they endured.
Please be generous to the work of the Archbishop. Pledge cards can be found in all pews and at the doors for Sunday Masses. Thank you!
Many of you have had the opportunity to talk with Fr. Jean Ikanga, attend his Masses and hear his beautiful sermons. You know that he is from the Congo and has been studying at Regis University for the past two years. On May 16th, he will move to Indianapolis where he will continue his doctoral studies and then return to Africa where he will serve the people of his native country. We have been greatly blessed to have Fr. Ikanga with us these past two years and we will keep him and his family in our prayers in a particular way.
On Mother’s Day we will place upon the altar the names of your mothers, living and deceased, and commend them to the Lord Jesus. How do you place your mother’s name on the altar? Just fill out the Mother’s Day offering envelope that is attached to the bulletin or obtain one from the Rectory, return it by Friday, May 8th, and we’ll place it on the altar for Mother’s Day and the remainder of May. Also, the parish has printed beautiful greeting cards for you to send to your mother, telling her that she will be remembered in our Masses here at Holy Trinity. These are available at the church, entrances this weekend and next, as well as at the parish office for $1.00 each.
During the entire month of May we will pray the Rosary in common before all the weekend Masses. When we pray the Rosary together, our parish asks Mary’s intercession and prayers for our families and loved ones. She always points us to her Son, Jesus, helping us to follow Him more lovingly. So, beginning next weekend, come 20 minutes before each Mass and join in this beautiful devotion!
