Anyone who hasn’t heard that our beloved Holy Father, Benedict XVI, sent a letter to the entire world must live in complete isolation. Turn on the radio, open a newspaper, watch TV, and you’ll hear the latest “expert” proclaim what the Encyclical “Caritas in Veritate” (a/k/a, “Charity in Truth”) really means. We have become so accustomed at looking at everything in political terms, that the true key to reading this document, which is: our Lord Jesus Christ and His teachings, is usually left out of the equation. No wonder we get confused!
As you have certainly heard, and as I mentioned before, our beloved Holy Father, Benedict XVI, has dedicated the year between June 19, 2009 and June 19, 2010, to understand, promote and rediscover the priesthood. Why do we have priests? Do we need them? What is their role? These are all questions that we will be pondering over the next twelve months. I believe that all of us, laypeople and priests, need to refocus on the meaning of the priesthood and its role in God’s plan of salvation, with the help of our Pope. Let’s read to his words, as he walks us through the mystery of the Sacramental Priesthood:

When my siblings and I were young, we had no TV; my folks did not take us to the movies, and we loved spending time at home and with our young cousins. Were we rich or poor? We did not know nor did we ever think about it: The words meant absolutely nothing to us. We never went hungry or homeless. Our best times were spent on vacation, in grandpa’s cabin in the Alps, where walking through the woods every day to the spring, to get drinking and cooking water was a adventure, and taking a bath on the terrace, in a tub of water that had been warmed by the sun was fun. We shared the “laundry facility” (two huge, connecting outdoor tubs, fed by another spring), with the village’s milk cows, taking care that the tub with the suds was clean and filled with fresh water by dusk, when the cows returned from their pasture to drink, before heading to their stables to be milked. Grandpa told us old stories, mom and dad loved us. When the pantry was low, before payday, mom improvised. Ever had “hot homemade chocolate pudding” for dinner? Yum! No radio, no refrigerator, one naked light-bulb hanging from the middle of every ceiling, and a fireplace to keep us warm in the evenings. Now, that’s happiness!
After all the Masses next weekend, July 11-12, Fr. Carlos and I will be passing out scapulars of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel to all of you who would like to have one to wear. Why do we do this? Well, the scapular is a beautiful reminder that each and every day we are ‘putting on Jesus Christ’ and placing His gentle yoke upon our shoulders. Every time that we kiss the scapular and put it on, it reminds us to give ourselves and our day to Jesus through the intercession and prayers of the Blessed Virgin Mary. After an entire year, our scapulars get pretty worn out, so the month of July when we celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel is a good time to pick up a new one.
As we celebrate the Fourth of July, we again give thanks to Almighty God for our beloved country. How blessed we are to live in this land of the free. Let us never cease giving God thanks for all our blessings and let us continue to pray for the USA and her people.
