Some years ago, when I was working at the Archdiocesan offices, my priestly boss went to a pet store during his lunch hour, to purchase food for his fish. The young man who helped him stared at him for a while then asked: “Excuse me, sir, are you a priest?” “Yes, I am,” answered my boss. At that, the young man broke into a wide smile and exclaimed: “Cooool! I‟ve never seen a priest before!” just as though he had seen a giraffe!

I just spoke with Fr. Lorenzo today by telephone. He is in Italy spending some time with his family in Bologna. In August, he will fly to South Africa where he has been assigned to be a member of the national evangelization team. It will be the responsibility of this national team to oversee the work of the Neocatechumenal Way throughout that country. A great deal of responsibility is being placed upon his shoulders, so keep him in your prayers. He will be living in the capital city, Pretoria, which is in the north central part of the country. Because South Africa is south of the Equator, it will be Winter there when he arrives! I’m sure that this will be only one of many adjustments that he will have to make. As soon as I have a mailing address for him, I will pass it on to you.

The first vivid memory of my life took place, logically enough, in the little village in the Alps where, during our summer vacations, my grandfather’s cabin sheltered our night and rainy days. At all other times, no one could keep us inside.
Here I was, almost four-years old, walking with my aunt and cousin on the rough trail that brought us to nonno’s cabin. I insisted on carrying part of my luggage. Emerging from the trees, some 20 minutes later, we finally saw the little house, shining white, halfway down the valley. The slope was covered in tall, green grass, dotted with flowers and the Alps were all around us. The picture still lives in my mind: I was so overwhelmed that I dropped whatever I was carrying, threw myself on the ground and started rolling downhill, laughing. Nothing can ever compare, in my mind, with the beauty of that tiny village (now much larger, alas). Talking with my younger siblings, our summers at Piani Resinelli hold just such a joyful memory in our hearts.
On June 29, 2009, our beloved Holy Father, Benedict XVI, issued a letter that follows those of three other Popes, Rerum Novarum, by Leo XIII, Populorum Progressio, by Paul VI, and Centesimus Annus, by John Paul II. All these encyclicals deal with the dignity of man and the justice to which each person is entitled. Many have taken these encyclicals to justify their own particular brand of economics or politics. In fact, the Pope is above all that, and Pope Benedict XVI, in his newest Encyclical, Caritas in Veritatis, is trying to, once again, make the point that, justice cannot exist without love and truth.
