Returning Home

Every year, many adults knock at the doors of the Church, asking for entrance. Among them are also those who were baptized Catholic but, for various reasons, did not receive all the Sacraments. Others never attended Religious Education classes, and are looking for answers to their questions. Our wise and loving Mother, the Church, has responded to this need by establishing a program of instruction called Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, better known as R.C.I.A..

Saint James on Generosity

This is how the today’s reading from Saint James begins: “Come now, you rich, weep and wail over your impending miseries. Your wealth has rotted away, your clothes have become moth-eaten your gold and silver have corroded …” Wow, what strong words! Is Saint James telling us that money is evil and will destroy us in the end? No. He strongly rebukes those for whom money is their God. Through this reading, our Lord is asking us: “Am I your security and safety or is your money your security?” Is money our God or do we place our money in service of God and others?

Outdoor Rosary Procession After Mass on October 3rd

Next Saturday, October 3rd, at 6:00 pm our parish of Holy Trinity will have our ninth annual Outdoor Rosary Procession and you’re invited to take part in this beautiful public prayer. So many people participated last year and it was a touching experience! I hope that the crowds will be even larger this year as we gather together to offer our nation, parish, families and ourselves to the good Lord Jesus through the intercession of His Blessed Mother. We will begin in the church right after the 5:00 pm Mass, start the Rosary indoors and then process outdoors to pray for Our Lady’s intercession and blessing.

Rosary Before All Masses

The month of October is dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary. I invite you to make this a time of special grace through the praying of the Rosary each day as a family. The Rosary will be prayed 20 minutes before all of the weekend Masses throughout the month of October. Come early to the Holy Mass and join in this ancient and noble prayer.

The Gentleness of God

Every once in a while, someone comes up to me after Mass and tells me: “I loved your column.” Invariably, it was one in which I spoke of my Italian childhood. The stories are nothing special, they describe a simple life which most folks would call “boring.” No excitement, no fabulous trips, no extraordinary events. So, why the attraction? Isn’t it the same feeling we have when we look back at the memory of our childhood, when things were simpler and life less threatening? Besides, the older we are, the more there is to look back and reflect upon: people, events and even landscapes that have shaped us. We turn around to recapture a beauty that is now lost. In fact, many of the folks who attend R.C.I.A. (the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults), say that they come because the memory of their parents or grandparents is all bound up with the Catholic Faith. After years of wandering all over the place, they are coming back to what is familiar, what is loved, what is safe; to what the song calls “that old time religion.”

Under Whose Influence Do We Live: The Holy Spirit or The Spirit of Deception?

Last Sunday I spoke of the importance of discerning between spirits: As St. Paul tells us, “The Spirit says clearly that in later times some believers will desert the Christian faith. They will follow spirits that deceive, and they will believe the teachings of demons.” (1 Tim 4:1)

Let me show you what I mean. In the Gospel, our Lord Jesus conducts the first opinion poll! He asks the question: “Who do people say that I am?” The apostles give our Lord the results of the opinion poll: “Some say You are John the Baptist, others Elijah, and still others one of the prophets.” Obviously, those who gave their opinions were not listening to the Holy Spirit, right? How do we know? Because the results of the poll are dead wrong!
